Fringe with Benefits

That cute leather 80s rocker jacket or that denim coat with the fringe comes from a long line of fashion outwear that served more than looks - it was to keep rain off the jacket while giving it somewhere to "trickle down" - and you thought that was just a terrible economic practice! 

Fringe looks cool too, don't get me wrong, but just make sure it's not made from an absorbant fiber that's going to increase the weight of the coat.
